Some Kind of Awesome Radio - 07/11/2015

Typing up all the show notes this week for once because I love you, fam.

YES! I'M ACTUALLY DOING SHOW NOTES FOR THIS WEEK! #sorrynotsorry but like I said in this week's episode I've been dealing with a bit of blogger burnout and even though doing the show is very therapeutic for me when you see how thorough I intend to be moving forward you will understand why I put this off for as long as I could. Again, I really appreciate those of you who listen and never get the promised show notes. NO MORE BROKEN PROMISES! Just quality #content in addition to a bunch of other new things in the works right now.

Hope you enjoyed this weeks show! Feel free to drop a comment here or hit me up on Twitter. I'd love to hear what you thought of this week's picks!

Until next week!

<3

@kibbe!

BONUS JUST FOR YOU FAM! I'm also making playlists on Spotify for every single show. NO SHUFFLE THO BECAUSE THAT'S CHEATING! Additionally, as the shows become available on iTunes I will update each post with a link to the show for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!

[News] Bestival Announces Line-Up Additions; Beck & Foals join Outkast as headliners

Bestival has just announced its initial line-up and it's going to be hard to beat in terms of ending your summer on a high in 2014. Beck and Foals will top the bill at the event, joining the returning duo of Outkast, as announced last week. The rest of the acts announced are Disclosure, Major Lazer, Sam Smith, CHVRCHES, London Grammar, Wild Beasts, Caribou, Clean Bandit and Laura Mvula.

As is tradition with the festival, it will have a theme and this year it's 'Desert Island Disco'. I think opens up a few more options compared to 2013's nautical 'HMS Bestival' theme so get your thinking caps on if you're planning on grabbing a ticket.

Bestival takes place from September 4th-7th on the Isle of Wight and tickets are on sale now.

[Listen] Daphni - "Paris"

Dan Snaith, of Caribou fame, will be bringing back his Daphni moniker for a release in mid-October, the 9-track JIAOLONG. The fist cut from the album "Pairs" is a crazy flashback to the days of 16-bit video games in the late '80s or early '90s, a dazzling array of synthesizers and afrobeat influences. Check out the song below alongside visuals created by Jane Easlight.

[News] Caribou's Dan Snaith Announces Full-Length Daphni Release

Dan Snaith, aka Caribou, has been making music under the Daphni alter-ego for over a year and a half now, but that has been limited to remixes and solo tracks. Now, though, Snaith will be putting out a full-length release under the Daphni moniker this fall. Titled JIAOLONG (the same name of Snaith's label), the album was inspired by Snaith's time DJing in clubs while touring as Caribou, and here's what he had to say about how the album came to be:

I'd fallen back in love with moments in small, dark clubs when a DJ puts on a piece of music that not only can you not identify but that until you heard it, you could not have conceived of it existing. In contrast to live concerts where bands predictably string together the songs from their most recent album, DJs have the potential to blindside you, be genuinely surprising. As a music producer, the parameters of dance music seem wider. The rhythmic underpinnings are liberating rather than constraining, allowing the rest of the elements to coalesce from a broad palette.

He continues, saying:

I've been surprised by the number of transcendent moments that I, sober and in my mid-30s, have had in clubs in the last few years, both as a punter and as a DJ. Against my expectations, there's some magic in it still. The clichés about the collective consciousness of clubs still seems to hold water in some special cases. Set against the backdrop of bland and functional dance music and the mind-numbing predictability of the EDM barfsplosion currently gripping the corporate ravesters, there is a small world where dance music lives up to its potential to liberate, surprise, and innovate. It's there that I hope Daphni has a place.

JIAOLONG is out on October 16th in North America via Merge/Jiaolong, and on October 9th digitally. After the jump, you can check out the album tracklisting as well as the video for his 2011 single "Ye Ye", which was directed by Jane/Eastlight.
