#diSKOAverweekly: week of February 26, 2020

Here is your Wednesday update on a Friday. My bad. But I love you, so. There’s that.

  1. Bamily - “Katata”

This song feels like bottled sunshine. You’re welcome.

  2. The Undercover Dream Lovers - “Chardonnay”

This whole album is so chill. Oh yeah, that came out today. Go listen to It’s All In Your Head.

  3. Disq - “Daily Routine”

Looking forward to their debut album Collector, which drops….next week(!!!)

  4. Little Hurt - “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay”

Just in case you need the reminder. 💖

  5. Example - “Back On The Wreck”

Not for nothing dude is crushing it on the self-releasing game. Also like that the pop sheen has kinda worn off and he’s back to making cooler jams like this.

  6. Firstworld - “Groove Is In The Heart (feat. Delia Dane)”

This is one of the best covers I’ve heard in a long time. I was really skeptical with this at first but they really nailed it.

  7. Spencer Ludwig - “Just Wanna Dance”

Just making sure you listen to Spencer while I wrap up this interview so you can love him like I love him.

  8. Niki Black - “The Other Man”

Very happy to see Niki is back with more music. She dropped a really cool video for this too that you should check out.

  9. Madame Gandhi - “Bad Habits”

Had this song on a lot lately to remind myself to be better so passing this along to y’all in case you missed it. Gonna see this bad bitch on March 10th at Elsewhere. Think we’re doing an interview, too!

  10. Joe Publik - “Military Minded (feat. Scorzayzee)”

Missed that his new record Stubborn Vectis dropped last week. Dropped this in as a mental note to check it out.

  11. RJD2 - “Pull Up On Love (feat. STS, Khari Mateen)”

First single from RJD2’s upcoming album The Fun Ones out on April 17th! I’m so happy he’s back I’m not sure if my feet are touching the ground when I walk around listening to this.

  12. Juice - “DiCaprio (Love Me All The Time)”

Juice just shared the music video for this track and announced a headlining tour! Also the clip at the end lololol

  13. LOVER - “Waiting Up (feat. Cult Shøtta")”

Still loving on LOVER. Liked the video a lot for this too.

  14. Ry X - “Oceans (feat. ólafur Arnalds)”

I don’t know how else to explain it but this song feels like you’re coming up for air.

  15. Black Books - “In The In”

Oh shit their EP Cheer Up dropped today! It’s great. Definitely worth a spin.

  16. Grivo - “H.D.C.”

Sad to have missed these guys open for Slow Crush at Saint Vitus earlier in the month. They remind me a lot of old school Starflyer 59, which is why my obsession is slowly intensifying.

[SONG OF THE DAY] Example - "All Night"

Longtime SKOA favorite Example has been cranking out some top tunes over the past year on his newly fashioned imprint, Staneric Recordings. I’m especially loving his latest, “All Night”, which in addition to painting a picture of how I envision going out in London must be like, is living proof that the man his living his best life. In addition to the new single, Elliot and his totally adorable wife, model Erin McNaught made a DIY music video after putting their kids to bed in what appears to be their living room. There’s no well thought out choreography or anything over the top about it. While other people are enjoying the video for, um, reasons, I just love the idea of these two drunk trying to quietly do somewhere around 12 takes to make this video hoping to god that their kids didn’t wake up. I wouldn’t be surprised if the song took off because people decided to recreate the video because of its simplicity and playfulness. Considering he did everything on his own for this single, I hope this becomes the norm for him. The multitasking looks really good on him.

me going through all the new music this week

Oof. Really stoked for this show and because I submitted it late it was a little borked airing. You didn't even get to hear the last two segments. :( All good though! There's always next week (not to mention the podcast that will be attached to this show shortly). But yeah, trying to get back to digging out those little diamonds in the rough that I enjoy supporting. Plus HELLO NEW KENNA!! *praise hands emoji* A lot to be excited about. Expect more posts in between this show and the next with more info on the bands we're featuring.

As always feel free to let me know what you thought of this week's show either by dropping a comment here or hitting me up on Twitter.

Until next week!

[Interview] Example Sets His Eyes On The US, Dishes About Album Number Three

In practically every other country other than the United States, Example is considered a world renown musician, with his album debuting at #1 in the UK and charting in Australia, Ireland, Germany, New Zealand, Scotland and Switzerland. Just like the many global musicians that have come before him, however, the US has not taken to the Playing In The Shadows singer... yet. Being inside of the US, it's hard for me to understand why it's so difficult for my fellow Americans to pick up on an artist like Example who can crank out such danceable tunes like "Won't Go Quietly", "Kickstarts", "Stay Awake" or his current single at American radio, "Changed The Way You Kissed Me". Hopefully this is about to change very soon.

Two weeks ago at Gramercy Theater in New York City I had the privilege of not only catching his first show in America. I have to admit, I wasn't completely sold on Playing In The Shadows until I was at this show. The intensity of the highly catchy dance music thumping in your chest paired with the way that Example is able to command an audience to dance until their feet are ready to fall off at the show was finally what won me over for the album. In addition to catching the memorable set, I was able to sit down with Mr. Elliot Gleaves himself prior to the performance and pick at his brain for a little bit about his obsession with America, the struggles of slowly tackling the worldwide dance scene one city at a time, his unique approach to writing songs, some details about his upcoming fourth album and much more.

Kibbe sat down with Example backstage just before his first show in NYC/the US at Gramercy Theater on March 26, 2012. They discussed his style of songwriting, the struggles of UK acts breaking in the US market, and more!

[Listen] Example - "Changed The Way You Kissed Me feat. Ludacris"

In celebration of Example making it over to the US of A, "Changed The Way You Kissed Me" has been updated complete with added vocals from Ludacris. Not really sure how necessary that was because the single was solid before, but this is a pretty nice additioon to the track. Either way, we're still really excited that this side of the pond will finally get some facetime with Elliot.

Don't forget about our contest to catch Example at his US debut in NYC at Gramercy Theater next Monday, March 26th!
