diSKOAver weekly: Week of December 15, 2021
Hiii I don’t want y’all to think I popped in for one update only to vanish again for months on end. Truth be told, a bitch got her booster on Monday (🙏🏻) and did not anticipate how much it would affect her stamina for shouting into the void about songs I adore. I’m kind of obsessed with this update because *Stefon voice* it’s got a a little bit of everything: a conspiracy theory about a ✨magic manifestation song✨, a drugged out music video shot by the singer’s mom, vocabulary words, playful threats, and so much more!
don’t tell anyone I said this, but I love you best!
✨💖
kibbe!
Allday - ”After All This Time”
Came across this lil Aussie sweetie via one of my most favorite finds, Memphis LK. His latest record, Drinking With My Smoking Friends, is indie pop perfection. I always find myself going back to “After All This Time” because it’s just so perfectly fucking catchy and sweet. Also you should follow him on TikTok. Him and Memphis LK do hilarious little weird sketches together like this one. I’m obsessed.
The Toxhards - “How Lucky Am I?”
When this landed on my FYP and I heard the lyric, “How lucky am I that I can afford to be alive? How lucky am I that I’m living through the end of times?” I scream-laughed so hard that I missed the rest of the song. I really love how this song just kinda laughs in the face of misery. Additionally, I discovered that the music video for this song was shot by singer Alan Macchiarolo’s mom while he was post-op high from ear surgery and doesn’t really remember shooting it, which officially makes this band’s sense of humor the best ever.
maxime. - “telephone wires”
Another FYP find. It was when I came across Canadian cutie maxime. that I determined that I have sufficiently trained The Algorithm™ on TikTok to deliver me the best baby bands. This is the title track from his latest EP. There’s not a subpar song in this kids’s entire catalog and if you disagree LMK so I can slap the stupid outta you and tell you how wrong you are.
MAX RAD - “Roll Out”
Thrilled to report that MAX RAD is still at maximum radness since last I checked in on him. Also as someone who loves having a song for every occasion the glitch witch in me is so delighted that I have a lovey song that references new moons.
sundiver ca - “Soundtrack for Your Backseat”
Okay but I have not stopped SWOONING since I stumbled into this song. It’s so simultaneously soothing and seductive. This one feels extra intimate in your headphones for sure. If a lyric like, “you tie my soul to the ground” doesn’t take your breath away then please don’t ever try to flirt with me. Also I can’t stop thinking about what would happen if Jason Martin/Starflyer 59 got to produce whatever this guy does next.
Ladyhawke - “Think About You”
Ladyhawke dropped a new album last month called Time Flies, which is appropriate given that it feels like I heard, “Mixed Emotions” back in May, blinked moments later, and then missed celebrating the album’s release date in November. Unsurprisingly, I’ve gravitated towards “Think About You”, a song about a fantasy infatuation that miraculously gets reciprocated. Thanks to reading up on this song, I now know of a new word, “limerence”: (n.): the state of being obsessively infatuated with someone, usually accompanied by delusions of or a desire for an intense romantic relationship with that person. The More You Know 💫.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - “That Life”
I assume there are two kinds of UMO fans: the kind that saw the music video for “That Life” and thought, “yeah I don’t get it” and the kind that are still trying to perfectly copy the puppets dance moves every time the song comes on. I’ll let you guess which kind of UMO fan I am. 💃🏼
Amber Ryann - “SWITCH”
I fucking love when I end up swiping my way into someone like LA’s Amber Ryann, whose unwavering confidence and diligence matches up with her talent level. Her latest EP, A SIGN OF THE TIMES (COLLECTION) has all the makings of a sleeper hit. The production is a blend of punchy pop and R&B with her sensuous vocals glistening all the way through. “SWITCH” is a clear standout moment of hers for me, and not just because it references one of my favorite pastimes: subtweeting. My gut says it’s only a matter of time before everyone catches on.
Yung Bae - “Straight Up Relaxin’ (feat. Cosmo’s Midnight)”
Alright so like, this is a very serious question that I would like to pose to the internet: does it throw you off when a song is released ✨out of season✨? As in, should a song about “straight up relaxin’ in the summer” be saved for a late spring release so it can build momentum through the actual summer, or does it not matter if it is dropped in the dead of fall? I assume that the majority of you have NOT worked in the music industry (and certainly not in as many different corners of it like I have), but plenty of you probably have seasonal listening habits like I do where your musical cravings adapt a bit with the seasons changing. I absolutely love this song so much, but I can’t tell if I’m being an old industry fuddy duddy or if this is an actual teachable moment for baby bands. Just this one time would y’all not make me feel like I’m shouting into the void and LMK your thoughts on this?
Oh Bummer! - “Mirrors”
The homey Fitts d.b.a. The Kickdrums tipped me off to this new project that he produced. LA based brainchild Tanner Houghton describes the project as, “songs that are a conglomeration of my manic ADHD thoughts - the diary of an overthinker,” So basically, music made just for yours truly (if I am to accept TikTok’s diagnosis that I have ADHD anyway). “Mirrors” is the first taste of his upcoming EP that is slated to drop in Spring 2022. I will probably harass Fitts to let me have a listen before then. Will report back accordingly. 😘
clashingedge- “Don’t miss”
I’ve never gone out of my way to rank my favorite algorithms yet but the Soundcloud one is def in the top 5 for bringing me clashingedge a few years ago. Her airy vocals are quite stunning. Anyway we’ve kept in touch since the fateful day I tracked her down to tell her that the song that Soundcloud autoplayed me into was very good. A few months back she dropped, “Don’t miss”, which is a lovely evolution from the gateway drug of a song I first heard, which I would link to but unfortunately she’s pulled that one and a slew of other tracks down. Her and I are overdue for a catchup so I’ll be getting to the bottom of this soon enough.
Amtrac- “Oddyssey”
Look, we all need to listen to more Amtrac, okay? If the title track from his album that dropped last year doesn’t convince you, then maybe some of the newer tracks he’s dropped since then featuring collabs with the likes of The Juan Maclean, Durante, and Washed Out (his “Hide” remix) will. And if that doesn’t, well, maybe we need to discuss the status of our friendship moving forward….😬😬😬.
tiLLie- “Hell Yeah!”
While snagging her track, “faith” for a friend who I thought could use the support it offered me I quickly realized that I’d missed a slew of songs since her 2019 LOUD MOUTH EP. Thankfully I’m all caught up now. The thing I continue to love about tiLLie is that she makes vulnerability really fucking cool. Take this newer track, “Hell Yeah!”, which is saturated in sarcasm in the best possible way all the while rocking this tight 90s UK garage-ish sound (which made me think of Lucious Jackson a lot if I’m being honest). The chorus goes, “Like hell yeah. I made it through today. Like hell yeah. The sun is in my face. Like hell yeah I made it through today without crying, without dying, hey.” Def a song that belongs in everyone’s 2021 time capsule/mood board.
Moullinex x Xinobi - “Imaginary Numbers”
I have such a *professional crush* on Portuguese producer Mouillnex. I always squeal like an idiot when I see he’s dropped something new. This collab with newcomer to my earholes Xinobi is good energy. If this is your first foray into Portuguese electronic music, you’re welcome for the 2 for 1 special yer girl is offering with this one.
LP Giobbi- “Take My Hand”
I am having the best fucking time watching LP Giobbi’s ascension to greatness. With every Instagram post of her grinning from ear to ear in complete control of the crowd in addition to seeing all the good that her non-profit FEMME HOUSE continues to do it just increasingly makes my heart oh so happy. She is my little Princess of Piano House and I will protect her at all costs so she’s smiling forever. If you haven’t checked out my interview with her you absolutely should. She makes it so easy to love her.
iANO- “Labrynth”
So there was a thing going around on TikTok where apparently another song of iANO’s called “Time In Oblivion” possessed some potent manifestation power as long as you at the very least had a recording of the song sitting in your drafts. The sound has since been pulled down from TikTok and all DSPs (which led to this interesting conspiracy theory about that surfacing) but me being the curious little shit that I am I wanted to know what else was in the elusive artist’s repertoire and came across an album they recently released, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I’ve been debating whether or not to reach out to iANO to talk about this manifestation phenomenon, especially after glancing at the comments on the SoundCloud for the song to link to this post. Like people are straight up making wishes etc in between troll comments. So yeah if anyone is interested LMK and I’ll electric slide into their DMs for the 411.

Today Brooklyn based Aubrey Haddard (and future best friend, I hope) shares her latest track, “Thin Line” along with accompanying music video. I have been waiting ALL WEEK (and a bit longer than that if I’m being honest) to share this one with you. Tell you what, this is the kinda bad bitch energy I intend to be strutting out of quarantine with. Every time I play this song (which has been at least 3 times a day) I pick up these Ladyhawke meets 90s era Sheryl Crow vibes, where she strikes this sophisticated balance of modern indie pop while maintaining an overall rich analog feel to her sound. I suppose you could say it walks a….. thin line…. between retro and modern.
Speaking on the track, Aubrey shared, "The song kind of touches on the factors in my life that tend to push me over that line between sanity and chaos, but it's mostly about feeling. A little uneasy and a lot of fun."

[Watch] Ladyhawke - "Blue Eyes" (Official Video)
From her latest single we have the official video for Ladyhawke's "Blue Eyes" from her sophomore album Anxiety which is now available everywhere. The video was shot in the Oceano Dunes in California under the direction of Jess Holzworth who I admittedly am only familiar with for her work by means of Beck's "Gamma Ray" video. The proper release for "Blue Eyes" isn't until September 17th but will feature killer remixes from the likes of Jacques Renault, Alison Wonderland, Junior and label mates Canyons. After a successful tour in May, UK tour dates are expected to be announced within the coming weeks, so keep your eyes out for that.
[SKOA Presents] Some Kind of Mixtape: April 2012
Honestly, where is this year going!? It feels like last month we were doing our end of the year write ups and making plans to party on New Years Eve, but here we are nearly halfway into the year already. That means it's definitely time to start making all of your festival plans and start picking songs to listen to on the way to the beach. This month's tunes that have been hand selected by us for Some Kind of Mixtape: April 2012 are sure to point you in the right direction. As always, we've left you some tidbits about each song via our "liner notes" below and be sure to have a listen below via our 8tracks player. Our other mixtapes from earlier in the year are all over on 8tracks as well.

Animal Kingdom - "Strange Attractor"
It's been hard to take this song off of repeat ever since I saw the rather bizzare video to accompany the track, but "Strange Attractor" one of those kinds of songs that you want to put on while driving at sunset with the windows down so that the glimmering guitars and airy vocals can echo up into the sky and bring the stars out more quickly. This lovely gem comes from London outfit Animal Kingdom who are a week away from releasing their sophomore album The Looking Away that's packed with their unique blend of indie pop. Keep your eyes peeled on May 8th and be sure to grab a copy of the album for yourself. - Kibbe
Jai Paul - "Jasmine" (Demo) (from the Jasmine (Demo) Single)
Somehow, with only two songs to his name, Jai Paul has managed to remain in music conversation for years. His premier track "BTSTU" initially released in 2007 as a demo, and has since been reworked several times and sampled by the likes of Drake and Beyoncé. "Jasmine," Jai Paul's second outing, delivers an even more enticing package than, with deep, pounding basslines, catchy guitar riffs and echoey, reverb-heavy vocals combining seamlessly. Despite having only two tracks, Jai Paul deserves all the hype given to him. Bragging rights are acceptable with a track record such as his. - Adrian
PINS - "Eleventh Hour"
Seeming to have come from nowhere, PINS have emerged like a butterfly, fully formed and dripping in an undeniable beauty. This, their second track with thumping anthemic drums paired with the distant yet bright guitar makes a great combination. The chant like vocal work also adds to the mystery. A lot darker than the rhythm of "Shoot Me" but just as moreish. I've had this on repeat a lot this last month so maybe you'll enjoy it just as much? - Shey
El-P - "Oh Hail No" Feat. Mr Muthafuckin eXquire and Danny Brown
One of my personal anticipated records of the year, El-P delivers yet again with his forthcoming 3rd LP (no pun intended), Cancer For Cure. And what better track to represent a sharper wittier El than the banging "Oh Hail No" which features 2 of the most current hyped wordsmiths, Mr Muthafuckin eXquire and Fool's Gold's Danny Brown. Although, the guest features on this track (and the album) stray away from El-P's old Def Jux partners, the trio deliver without mercy over El-P's destructive backdrop. C4C hits shelves on May 22nd, preorder here and make sure you check out El's upcoming tour featuring Mr Muthafuckin eXquire, Killer Mike and Despot. - Rocko
Norah Jones - "After The Fall"
Danger Mouse x Norah Jones = Awesome. That pretty much sums up Norah Jones' new album, Little Broken Hearts (which actually dropped today) to a T. After Jones teamed up on Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi's Rome album last year, it was on inevitable for things to come back around and have Jones and DM work together on a full LP together. Aside from the leaks and single releases ("Happy Pills", "Say Goodbye" and "Travellin' On") the track I have currently on repeat is "After The Fall" which displays that classic Danger Mouse sound combined with the amazing vocals and lyrics from Norah Jones. Check it out and pick up the album today. - Rocko
Jack White - "Missing Pieces"
No-matter what band/group/project he's working on at any one moment, Jack White can make it his own. Now, when it came to his solo project it's hard to deny that we all, yes even you there in the back, we all got excited. A man of many talents but we all wanted to see and hear what direction his very own solo album would take. "Missing Pieces" is the opening track from Blunderbuss and it encompasses everything Jack is. Multiple instruments all prominently yet carefully placed resulting in an engaging piece of music. Just listen, stop reading. - Shey
The D.O.T. - "And A Hero"
I discovered The Streets and The Music back in college. I remember being so fascinated by the tone of Rob Harvey's voice on The Music's self-titled album and chuckling to myself at how clever I thought Mike Skinner's lyrics were on Original Pirate Material. Years went by and I watched their careers unfold and was pretty upset as both bands dwindled around the same time. Little did I know at the time that the brief collaborations on The Streets' Computers and Blues album would transition Skinner and Harvey into a new project which we now know as The D.O.T. I wasn't sure what to expect at first, but after hearing "And A Hero" I could not be more excited to see this next chapter unfold for these two. The production on this track is like a breath of fresh air into Skinner's signature sound and Harvey's vocals on this track make my eyes water just a tiny bit every single time. I absolutely cannot wait to hear more - Kibbe
Major Lazer - "Get Free" (Feat. Amber Coffman)
What can I write about Major Lazer that hasn't already been said? I could try to make up some off the cuff word to describe their sound. But why should I? We all know by this point that the combination of Diplo and Switch is a beautiful one and by adding in Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors for vocal duties just takes it up another notch of ever growing greatness. No doubt we'll be having more Major Lazer treats over Summer, Diplo doesn't know how to take a break. - Shey
Purity Ring - "Obedear" (from their forthcoming album Shrines out July 24th via 4AD and Last Gang)
Edmonton duo Purity Ring are swiftly and gracefully establishing themselves as a favorite throughout the blogosphere, dropping select songs here and there. The difference? Each and every song they release is absolutely fantastic. "Obedear" is the best track they've delivered so far, and makes the July 24th release of their debut album Shrines even more anticipated. Pulsating gothic synth sounds surrounding ominous chanting and the spine-tingling vocals of Megan James, "Obedear" is the kind of song that, despite leaving you with goose bumps, has you desperately wanting more. What's not to love? - Adrian
White Fence - "Green Balloon" (from the Green Balloon 7" Single out May 22nd via Sexbeat)
Being a huge fan of Ty Segall, the psychedelic stylings of White Fence stood out immediately. "Green Balloon" is a great example of what makes the '60s-inspired psychedelic rock revival so appealing, as drowned out vocals and fuzzy guitar riffs pound in your ears like a flashback to a decade where music was at its finest. In every way, this song evokes the feeling of freedom and experimental creativity that was so prominent in the '60s, and all with a refreshingly carefree attitude. With his collaborative LP with Ty Segall out and volume one of his two volume Family Perfume LP released, 2012 is proving to be a good year for White Fence and the psychedelic rock revival. - Adrian
The Uncluded (Aesop Rock x Kimya Dawson) - "Bats"
Rhymesayers always knows how to deliver big on Record Store Day and this year was no different with the release of the 2012 RSE picture disc featuring new music from RSE flagship artists, Atmosphere and the debut of Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson's collaborative project, The Uncluded. We've been excited for this collaboration ever since the announcement of the two working together on Kimya's recent LP Thunder Thighs and last year's Daytrotter Session. And after hearing the studio version of "Bats", we can't wait to hear more from two of music's most eclectic artists. The duo's album will drop later this year, but you can expect Dawson to guest feature on Aesop Rock's forthcoming album Skelethon this July. - Rocko
Ladyhawke - "Sunday Drive"
Relationships are such complicated things. A lot of times the central issue in a troubled relationship is a lack of communication. I really doubt that this was the case when Ladyhawke penned her latest single, "Sunday Drive". She really lays her heart bare in front of all of us as she details a relationship that is clearly not doing so well. Not only do her lyrics speak to just about anyone who's ever had a tough love life, but her delivery on this song was very well thought out. She doesn't come off sounding too miserable, but there's just a twinge of pain in her voice as she sings, "Please don't go / I need your love" from the chorus. Typically by the end of the song I feel the urge to hunt down Ladyhawke down myself to give her a hug because the song has shaken me that much. - Kibbe
[Listen] Ladyhawke - "Sunday Drive (Scissor Sisters Remix)"
As if I wasn't super into this song already, this remix provided by Scissor Sisters for Ladyhawke's latest single, "Sunday Drive" takes an already poptastic song, injects it full of dry ice and sends it twirling carelessly out on a disco ball-lit dance floor in a chilly foggy haze. The official "Sunday Drive" single package, complete with remixes such as this one along with ones from Willy Moon, Villa, Gigamesh, and The Slips will be available on May 27nd in the UK. Her sophomore album Anxiety drops on June 4th

Following up her lead single "Black, White and Blue", today we have the video for Ladyhawke's second single, "Sunday Drive", both of which are from her upcoming sophomore album Anxiety which drops on May 29th (28th in the UK) via Modular. It's hard not to appreciate a song like "Sunday Drive", which expresses itself so straightforwardly that you feel yourself become as immersed into the sitation that is being described as possible without personally knowing her. In fact, you may have been in this very situation yourself. The single will be available for purchase on May 21st.
